Do I Need a Referral to see a Podiatrist?
At Complete Podiatry, one of the most common questions that our admin team get from new clients is:
“Do I need a referral to see a Podiatrist?”
The short answer is.... No!
If you have foot or lower limb pain, you can book directly with us; no GP referral needed.
However, there are some exceptions where a referral is helpful or necessary, and in this blog, I’ll break it down so you know exactly what to do.
You dont need a referral to see a Podiatrist
When You Don’t Need a Referral
For most people, booking an appointment with a Podiatrist is just like booking with a Dentist or Physiotherapist.
If you need help with:
- Heel pain
- Flat feet
- Sports injuries
- Ingrown toenails
- Corns and calluses
- And many more..
You can call us or book online; no referral required.
Private patients with or without health insurance are always welcome to see us directly.
Podiatrists are the experts in heel pain treatment
When a Referral Can Help
While you don’t need a referral, it can be useful in certain cases, especially if your GP is helping coordinate your care.
For example:
1. Chronic Disease Management Plan (EPC Plan)
If you have a chronic medical condition (like Diabetes or Arthritis), your GP can create a Chronic Disease Management Plan that allows Medicare to cover part of your Podiatry visits; usually up to 5 visits per year.
To access this, you’ll need:
- A valid referral from your GP
- A EPC plan in place
- If you’re not sure if you qualify, speak with your GP or call our clinic, and we can walk you through it.
2. DVA (Department of Veterans’ Affairs)
Veterans with a DVA Gold Card or eligible White Card will need a referral from their GP to receive Podiatry care funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
We regularly work with DVA patients and are happy to help manage the paperwork with your GP.
3. WorkCover or Insurance Claims
If your injury is related to work or a motor vehicle accident, you may need a referral and claim approval through your insurer before we can begin treatment.
Podiatrist's accept DVA referrals
What About Private Health Insurance?
